The history of antique jewelry from the Middle Ages

The history of jewelry in the Middle Ages is rich and fascinating. During this period, jewelry had an important symbolic and social meaning. In the early Middle Ages, jewelry was worn primarily by the noble and ecclesiastical classes. Lords and queens wore crowns, tiaras, necklaces and brooches adorned with precious stones and pearls. This jewelry was often made by talented craftsmen, using precious metals such as gold and silver, and imported gemstones. Medieval jewelry also reflected religious and superstitious beliefs. They were decorated with crosses, religious symbols and designs inspired by nature, such as animals, plants and stars. As the Middle Ages progressed, jewelry began to be worn by broader social classes. Burghers and merchants wore simpler rings, bracelets and earrings made of silver, bronze or brass. Medieval jewelry was often made by hand, using techniques like filigree, engraving and enamelling. They were also often decorated with heraldic symbols, allowing members of noble families to be identified. In short, jewelry in the Middle Ages was precious objects loaded with symbolism, reflecting both the social status, religious beliefs and aesthetic tastes of the time.
